Read the following case carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Diben Sapkota, the HR manager of Work for Welfare, a nonprofit organization based in Solukhumbu, recently had posted a job for a recruiting and training specialist as an official post on LinkedIn. After, the recruitment was accomplished. As a benchmark of his experience, later he wrote, "I was looking for someone with a long experience on recruiting background and who could do from zero, for example, sourcing candidates to finalizing the new hires." he says. He also wanted the person who can start something and go ahead with enthusiasm. He says.
For the post, more than 130 candidates applied. The organization's new online application system that works with artificial intelligence that doesn't allow for cover letters. But, one of the applicants, Sarina (not her real name), sent a follow-email after submitting her résumé. In the post, Diben wrote, "And it's a good thing she did because she would've been cleared out otherwise,". Sarina's résumé made her look like a "job jumper"— only staying at particular job for short period of time in previous jobs or for employers. Diben at first assumed she was a poor performer who kept getting fired. She was also the only candidate who didn't have a four-year college degree, and did not major human resources as a major subject.
But, the ways Sarina wrote the email the HR manager's eye. First of all, it was professional in its outlook. Sarina clearly wrote that she was writing to double-check that her application had been received or not. However, she also mentioned how she got Diben's name and email (through her husband's boss who was on the board) and her personal connection to Work for Welfare (her father-in-law had done some work with the organization). Diben did not think that way she got the information was unethical or unprofessional. Instead, he sensed some skills in Sarina.
What really struck Diben, was what Sarina mentioned about the group and the challenges Work for Welfare was facing. Diben was amazed at this finding since he hadn't realized this even after being an important part of the organization. She'd done her research thoroughly and "listed some things she would do or already had done that would help us address those needs," wrote Diben, in the post. "The personality and passion she conveyed in the cover letter came through during her the job screening." Diben says. Hasina ended up being more than qualified for the job. "I wanted this role to be bigger from the get-go but I didn't think that was possible. When I met her, I knew we could expand it." Three weeks later Diben offered Sarina the job and she accepted.
Questions:
a. What significant information does Sarina seem to have included in the email?
b. Why do you think Sarina got the job?
c. What does this situation tell about the importance effective cover letter?
d. If you were Hasina, what additional information would you have mentioned in the cover letter to make it more impressive and professional? Why?
