The choice of occupation and the role of individuals are shaped by socio-cultural determinants, Most of the time the role of people are set according to their sexual, age as well as ethnic orientations which vary across time and space. Trekking guide is an occupation which has been choice of many individuals of Nepal as mountaineering and trekking are the most preferred option of the tourists. Nepal as trekking destination has gained wide recognition after 1970s and hundreds of tourists visit Nepal each year just for trekking.
According to Nepal Tourism Statistic, 2016 published by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, a total of 1,08,306 trekking which constitute 13,612 SAARC and 94,694 non-SAARC tourists visited Nepal in 2016. This data show the need and demand of trekking guides are in a rise. The government statistics show that there were 9741 trekking Guides in the fiscal year 2070/2071 BS which has increased to 13,049 by 2073/2074 BS.
Though there is no government data on number of trekking guides on the basis of sex. But many tourism related agency reports indicate that the occupation-trekking guide is dominated by men, to break this trend, some organizations have started to train women as the trekking guides, these organization provide training of a couple of months which include generational knowledge on tourism & hospitality and other knowledge in relation to trekking like communication skills as well as information on natural resources and population of trekking areas. A Pokhara based organization which was established in the year 1999 with the aim of empowering women and also making the women trekker's comfortable stands out in this effort. Apart from four- month training, the organization gives an optional apprenticeship course of five months. Its prime focus lies on instilling leadership quality and capacity building techniques to the trainees beyond trekking related knowledge and/or skills. Today, there are some young female trekking guides who are doing very well in their profession despite many obstacles and challenges.
